On this day in 1957, the first British hydrogen bomb was exploded near Christmas Island in the central Pacific; and in 1958 Sputnik III, the first "space laboratory" was launched in the USSR.  Now Christmas Island serves as a refugee camp for those detained for seeking a better life.  Solar birthday of L. Frank Baum (1856), author of Wizard of Oz: Follow the Yellow Brick Road!  Baum and his wife were both members of the Theosophical Society.*
