Mohawk Networks Awarded $6.4M Grant Via NY Broadband Initiative:

Mohawk Networks joins Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s $500 million initiative to ‘include all residents in the ongoing digital revolution’

Mohawk Networks, LLC, is bridging the internet connectivity divide in New York State, thanks to a recent $6.4 million grant through Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s $500 million “Broadband for All” initiative. The statewide program is committed to making high-speed internet—“no longer a luxury” but a necessity—accessible to every New Yorker by 2018. “Broadband is as vital a resource as running water and electricity to New York’s communities and is absolutely critical to the future of our economy, education, and safety,” the Broadband for All website states.

Mohawk Networks received the $6.4 million in state broadband funding through Round 2 funding, which totals $268 million in public-private investments. Formed in January 1, 2016 to deploy broadband to residents of Akwesasne and many surrounding communities,  Mohawk Networks has immediately advanced its expansion in Lewis County.

“The grant process is tough – we compete with industry leaders who have market advantage. Mohawk Networks is the only company working locally to deliver cost-effective, high speed internet at competitive prices through our wireless network,” said Vice-Chairman of the Board of Managers, Chief Ron LaFrance.

Owned by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Tewáthahon:ni Corporation, Mohawk Networks strives to empower more people to participate in the global economy. Although “millions of New Yorkers” have no or limited access to broadband, Native communities nationwide greatly lack technological infrastructure.  The average cost per household of deployment of Mohawk Networks’ wireless technology is $1,700. Now, through the $6.4 million grant under Gov. Cuomo’s Broadband for All program, Mohawk Networks, the parent company to North Country Broadband and Akwesasne TV, is playing a vital role in connecting Native communities, as well as all unserved and underserved communities, to high-quality and low-cost broadband services.

Managed by a seven-person board that includes members of Tribal Council and the community of Akwesasne, Mohawk Networks recently appointed a new interim CEO: Allyson Doctor. “On behalf of our Board, and more importantly, our community, we recognize the experience in leadership and background in managing a telecommunications company that provides critical services,” shared Marvin Phillips, Chairman of the Board. “Allyson has worked with the SRMT for the past four years. She’s been an integral part of the company as we transitioned from a tribally managed project to an LLC, ensuring continuity in our public and governmental relations.”

Doctor has 20 years of experience leading the growth and development of a 24/7 telecommunications operation in the healthcare sector. She brings expertise in tribal communications and government relations and holds a B.A. from SUNY Oswego and a Master of Science from Boston University.

“I appreciate the confidence of the Board and look forward to ensuring the long-term success of Mohawk Networks, North Country Broadband and Akwesasne TV,” Doctor said. “This is an impressive operation with a very strong team of engineers, technicians, customer service and field operations who are all committed to serving our community, our region and the mission of our company.”

Mohawk Networks extends a special thank you to New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Patty Ritchie, Senator Betty Little, Senator Joe Griffo, and Assemblywoman Addie Jennewe, as well as the people and legislators of Lewis County, New York. Additional appreciation is given for the leadership of Senator Charles Schumer and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik for prioritizing broadband expansion in the North Country and throughout the State of New York.*
